HARPER

The following Saturday, Harper had her monthly dinner with her parents and River. She always looked forward to these events, but tonight she wished Jax could have joined them.

David asked, “How do you like working for the company so far, Harper?”

She smiled. “I’m really enjoying getting to know all the different facets. I like it. The role encompasses many different components, so it doesn’t ever seem to get old.”

Her father nodded before asking, “Who has been the most efficient teacher of all my consultants?”

Harper thought back through the last few weeks that had flown by. Natasha was great at what she did. Harper was jealous whenever the woman turned her attention to Jax. Had they ever been intimate?

“Harp?”

“Oh, uh, well, Jax and Natasha are my best teachers. I have learned a lot during my time with each of them.”

David seemed satisfied with her answer and moved on to asking River how he was doing and what his new girlfriend was like. Sandra looked overly interested in River’s responses, but then again, her parents did always seem to be more attentive to River than her. Harper zoned out of their conversation as she pushed the food around on her plate. A small smile played on the edges of her mouth as memories of the past few weeks played through her mind. Stolen moments with Jax in the office. Nights at his house, making up for time lost during the day. Waking up in his arms.

On the Fourth of July, they’d gone to Cape Cod to watch the fireworks, setting up a blanket on the beach while they sipped on whiskey and ate sandwiches. Conversation had flowed easily enough about lighter topics. Jax didn’t like to share much about himself, and Harper didn’t mind, or press him. She was happy to fill their silences with food, sex, and playful stories. He would open up to her when he was ready.

“Ella is coming to visit me next week,” River said, drawing Harper back to the conversation.

Sandra wiped her mouth with her napkin. “Oh, I would love to meet her. Let’s do dinner one night. We can meet her as a family.”

“I’ll be with Isa in Greece these next two weeks,” Harper reminded her.

David furrowed his brow. “Missing two weeks of work and you haven’t even been there two months yet?”

She hated hearing the disappointment in his voice. “I told you about the trip months ago. It wasn’t last minute.”

While Sandra cleaned up dinner, David retired to his study with a book. River offered to walk out with Harper, and once they were on the street, he asked, “Do you really like working for Dad?”

She shrugged. “I mean it’s still a job, but it’s fun. Always something different. You have to be creative and organized, which I’m working on.”

“You seem different.” His eyebrow rose, suspiciously.

“So do you, lover boy,” she teased.

River smiled. “Oh, is that why you’re acting different too?”

Harper blushed. “No!” she said a little too quickly and louder than she should have.

“Ooh, Harper has a boyfriend,” he crooned.
